So, the whole “Google has been convicted” thing serves them right. I mean, this is not a problem of “freedom”. It’s a problem of technology. It is ‘cause Google Video is a crappy product, so as Groups, and a few other toys the kids in Mountain View have been neglecting over the years.

See, when John Resig complained about spam and other problems in Groups he was damn right. He still is in many regards, as Groups has been left floating in a sea of shit for so many years that eventually became outdated and unusable. After John’s post, the people in charge of this disaster have been trying to improve its code, adding a few features and preventing the thing from further falling to pieces. All it took was a prominent geek to very publicly complain about it, thus generating terrific buzz and forcing the clowns behind Groups to get on their asses and do some coding for a fucking change.

Same for Google Video. After Google bought YouTube, GV has become the underdog of video sharing sites. Hasn’t been improved for so many years that whenever I stumble upon it, it makes me feel I’m browsing the equivalent of a Geocities home page from 1996.

Community is sparse (everyone has moved to YouTube or Vimeo) and tools are such a joke that I bet I could upload a video of Robert Pattinson fucking a dead goat in a church while punching a baby in the groin and nobody would report the thing for decades. Nobody cares about what has been uploaded on Video. Nobody reports a thing. As a matter of fact, the last time I used Google Video was because some guy uploaded the entire Sicko on it. Eh.

So, Google might not be accountable for crap users upload (a judge begs to differ, sorry guys), but Google is very accountable for releasing technology that’s craptastic sucktacular. Technology that allows every fucktard out there to do with it whatever he wants.

Instead, the Google Zealots are all weeping now ‘cause they see the conviction as a Internet freedom issue. Wrong, morons. Freedom doesn’t apply for newspapers that publish every hate mail they receive. That’s why newspapers have a flack, or more than one, taking care of that, separating lunatics from acceptable senders. It doesn’t apply to me if a moron post death threats in the comment section of my site. Why should it apply to Google? The law is equal for everyone, except for those you care about because they wear witty t-shirts and play Lego and give cool services away? If so, change the fucking law but spare me this “serious threat to the web” thing.

Google’s defense is that they took the video down minutes after they were notified by authorities. Sure, but the very same video was on their servers for over two months before that. And it even topped in some sort of “most viewed” chart. Talk about swift counter-measures. I bet a dollar versus a donut that the same video couldn’t have survived on YouTube for more than one day, thanks to the tools and the community YT boasts.

Google’s probably losing money on GV, so they don’t give a shit regarding what kind of contents have been uploaded on it. That’s corporate greed and cunning, not a “freedom” issue.

Maybe this whole conviction thing will urge Google to go back to their Linux laptops and, like, oh-my-gawd! code some stuff. Or redirect Google Video onto YouTube, where a superior technology, an active community, and solid tools prevent people from watching weird german porns and clips of disabled people being kicked in the arse.

Andy Baio once wrote, commenting the jQuery/Groups fiasco, “if you want to know which areas of big companies are being ignored, watch for spam taking over”. Well, considering the circumstances, allow me to paraphrase that into “if you want to know which areas of big companies are being ignored, watch for videos of autistic kids being bullied taking over”.
